RECAP: Catching up on recent releases.

One of my top 5 favorite MC’s of all time. One Be Lo released his new album L.A.B.O.R. (Language Arts Based On Reality) along with 2 mixtapes of old and unreleased material. All that music should hold you over till the next Binary Starr album.

A snippet of the upcoming second album from Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli) was released. Sounds amazing.. can’t wait to hear a full song.

Madlib included a bonus disk when he released his album, Medicine Show No. 11. He calls the bonus disk, Madlib Around the World. This track is called Philadelphia.

Strange Fruit Project released a new album called Dreamer’s Journey. Not bad but I think I might miss their old material.

Finally, Phonte is rapping again (hopefully he will give up singing soon) and he and 9th Wonder are friends again.. So all is right with the underground again.

I have a decent amount of new music to share for the first time in a few weeks.

Just found out about his group, Actual Proof and I have to say I’m impressed. This duo just signed to 9th Wonder’s record label so I expect this track to be an example of the kind of music is to come. This track is produced by frequent 9th Wonder collaborator, Khrysis.

OneBeLo was the first MC that I truly became I fan of. He’s still one of my favorite rappers of all time and I’ve been anxious to hear his long overdue next album. This is his newest track.

He can rap. Forget the “rappers” he hangs out with, the rappers he equated to, and the genre he’s placed in. In that group of talentless newcomers, Kendrick Lamar stands out because of his potential and lyrical ability.

Here’s my attempt at revisiting an artist I said I would get back to you guys about. More great chill music from ShinSight Trio.

A psychedelic track from the Whitefield Brothers’ newest album released on Now Again Records.

fuckin’ ill.

Don’t ask me where this track came from. I would never guess Masta Ace and OneBeLo would be on a track together. A great beat with a RZA feel. Verbal Kent is actually the artist I wanted to showcase with this track but I found this collab on youtube and here you have it. OneBeLo kills it at the end though.

Asher Roth and Nottz released this collaboration EP last year and I’m just getting around to listening to it. I’m not a huge fan of either MC but so far I’m liking the album. Its nice to hear Roth spit with a different style and the beats aren’t bad either.

I’m not a huge fan of Sene or his work with Blu but its hard to mess up a beat like this..

NEWS: Music to my ears.

I’ve been waiting for the Deltron 3030 sequel for years.. The first album was hailed as one of the best hip hop albums of the decade. And that’s not hype. The concept album is a space opera set in the year 3030. In this video, Del the Funky Homosapien of the group Hieroglyphics gives proof that the next installment will see the light of day. From what I heard a while ago, Dan the Automator has already finished the beats and the scratches have been laid down as well, the only thing needed is Del’s vocals. Some of these vocals are shown in the video and Del gives some information on the storyline of the next album. Make sure to look out for the follow-up to one of my favorite albums.

I’m a pretty big LMNO fan even though I’m not too keen on the Visionaries.. I don’t like all their voices. I say that and realize it doesn’t make sense because LMNO has the weirdest voice in the group but still. I like his very rigid monotone style. I like that he’s from california too. This video is a promotion for the “James Kelley 10 album pack” just released by Up Above Records that includes all of LMNO’s 2010 albums including the 3 yet to be released. You can find the pack on the record label’s website. I’m actually still excited about one of the albums yet to come out. I have high hopes for No Apologies produced by DJ Babu of Dilated Peoples. That one comes out Nov. 16th so stay tuned for a single from that.

One of my top 5 favorite MC’s, OneBeLo is promoting his upcoming projects with this video. I’ve been waiting for his next album, B.A.B.Y. for a while but from what I’m hearing now he is set to release a FREE mixtape called L.A.B.O.R. very soon. I haven’t been hearing any release dates which is interesting because I know his group, Binary Starr, is said to have a 2nd album in the works. I’m not complaining or anything, I happy as hell that I’m going to get to hear so much onebelo in the near future. I’ve been playing the hell out of his last album, R.E.B.I.R.T.H. and that song ‘Grey.’ Look that shit up.

“..and Rodney King ain’t never felt a beat like this..”

This is a track from one of my favorite groups, Binary Star. Definitely one of my top 5 favorite MCs, OneBeLo, is ridiculous on this track. I can honestly say that the first underground show I went to was a OneBeLo show at Session A in Pomona. After that show it was a done deal. I was blown away. No hype men, no one else on stage with him. Just Lo spitting his heart out either on a track or acapella. He set the standard for artists for me after that. From then on I took music more seriously. That’s why it’s hard for me to watch rappers be more concerned about their career than the music they’re making. I mean OnBeLo said himself that he wants to be a millionaire but he’s just going to do it the right way without letting his music suffer.

I heard this song on the radio and didn’t know what it was. I haven’t listened to the radio for a couple years but the transmitter for my phone broke and I’m sick of my CDs. So now I just turn on the radio and press scan until I hear something familiar or something I like. Most of the time I’m listening to 3 seconds of every channel over and over again. radio is shit. My knowledge of rock in general is pretty limited so I’m not surprised I didn’t know. Maybe you might be.. either way its dope.

“..most cats in my area be loving the hysteria, synthesized surface conceals the interior, America…”

I’ve started hearing that Mos Def and Talib Kweli have been doing shows together and that’s a very good sign that a new Black Star album is on the way. I also read not too long ago on Mos’ twitter that he was working on writing tracks for the album. That gets me very excited as the group is highly acclaimed by critics and hip hop fans from all over the world. Mos Def is one of my top 5 favorite MCs of all time and though he sometimes focuses on expressing his unique style, I feel that making a new Black Star album will let him unleash his rapper side and we’ll get a lot of his more lyrical side. I’m not sure when we should expect the album, maybe late this year or early next year but that just me speculating. I think this will give Talib a chance to redeem himself after his collaboration album with Hi-Tek fell short. I know myself, I just kept going back to the song featuring Mos and Jay Elec even though I had to sit through a mediocre j cole verse.
